Carly Falls In Love With FarmBox LA

We received our 1st FarmBox delivery on a Sunday morning. A friendly deliveryman who offered to help bring in the bags greeted us.  I was most excited to see what was inside. We received the Complete Meat and Seafood Farmbox along with extra family snacks. It was filled with every color of produce such as kale, tomatoes, half a dozen of eggs, the most delicious quart of fresh orange juice, an onion, fresh parsley, our kids favorite raw milk- Organic Pastures, and much more.

Our family favorites were the Dapple Dandy Pluots, which were immensely flavorful and beautiful in a purple color. The lemon cucumbers, which didn’t look to pretty but tasted like a perfect juicy cucumber was something, I’ve never seen or had before.  I love how FarmBox gives you recipes on how to use everything in your box and tells you the best way to store them. I learned a lot in this section.

FarmBox also re-uses all of the freezer cold packs and bags that stores your food. On your next delivery they collect your previous shipments waste, so you can save all your scraps and FarmBox will compost it and put them back into the earth to grow new food. How cool is that?  We have tried other fruit/veggie home and office delivery services and the nice thing about Farmbox is that no 2 boxes you receive will ever be the same.  Not to mention Farmbox is run and owned by women so just another perk that makes us love supporting this company.

Back to the box we received. We made a beautiful salad using the spring mixed greens, lemon cucumbers, fresh parsley, purple tequila peppers, beefsteak tomatoes, and the organic Haas avocados, so delicious. We made grilled cheese sandwiches for the family using the whole-wheat bran loaf of bread that was perfectly soft and the Spring Hill Jersey Cheese that we can buy at our local farmer’s market here in Studio City. There are many creative things to do with the food that came in our box and these were just a few simple yet tasty ideas.

We also used the recipe provided in the newsletter to cook the Broiled Halibut and potatoes. That was such a quick and super healthy dinner for the family. The fish is from Community Seafood that is caught wild not farmed from the Santa Barbara channel so you know you are eating local and fresh.

We also enjoyed some kid friendly snacks that are now a favorite in my house. The Ha’s Apple Farm’s Fruit Rolls, you’ll never want to buy these from the store again. They have a few different varities and we are going to need to try each one. The vegetable Root chips also taste like potato chips so they satisfy that salty craving but are healthier than your average chip because they are made from beets and sweet potato. The quality of food is worth the prices and we will be using our SoCal Moms coupon code to order again.

What’s nice is that FarmBox has great values and gives back to their community. With every delivery, they donate produce to a local non-profit that brings fruit and vegetables to low-income moms and families. Supporting local farmers means you get fresh, delicious food for your family and you keep your money in your community. It’s nice to know that the fruit is picked from the trees and arrives at FarmBox within 24 hours. It’s no wonder the food we got in our box tasted way fresher and than anything we buy from the market. Thanks FarmBox for such a fun way to learn about the food we buy and eat and helping us keep our families healthy and happy.

Our CityMoms keep asking what gifts I found most helpful when my baby arrived this Summer. I was lucky and my crazy generous family showered me with everything the new babe could need! But there were a few gifts from my girlfriends that stuck out as being more for ME than little one, and those were huge lifesavers those first chaotic couple months! So here are my favorite GIFTS FOR THE POSTPARTUM MAMA!

1. My Mama Strut!

It’s a wearable soft brace to help you heal post-delivery. I first heard about the Mama Strut from my midwives at the Del Mar Birth Center. They never recommend things, so I knew this had to be more than just a waist training corset. (Though I wasn’t opposed to a little help in the vanity department either!) I mostly used it for ice therapy to reduce pain and swelling. And the tight support is continuing to help my worn out, post-preggers hips! This is a must-have for the postpartum mama, regardless of how she gave birth.

2. An Udderly Hot Mama Nursing Top.

I felt like a hot mess with a newborn. I could no longer wear my pre-pregnancy clothes, but was determined to stop wearing my maternity garb ASAP. This top is soft, flattering, and best of all – is especially made for breastfeeding. The shirts all pull down for each nursing or pumping session. And they even have a removable flap which allows for more discreet breastfeeding in public, or say, when visitors drop by to see the baby… Trust me on this one, you want to avoid flashing your father-in-law.

3. The Eclipse by Cotton Rainbow.

This little ditty is a lightweight car seat and stroller cover with weighted corners and a peek-a-boo window. It’s one of those things I didn’t even realize I needed until I already had it. Once I felt up to taking walks with the new babe, it was a champion against the blaring July sun and gusty wind. I also swear it helps her fall asleep since it dims light and blocks out too much outside stimulation. A bitty cotton miracle for this sleep deprived Mama!

Growing with Little Duck Organics!

Mighty Oats

We make it our job to keep you up to date on the best healthy products we discover as our toddlers eat, explore, and grow their way through each day.

Our favorite newbie is Mighty Oats instant cereal by Little Duck Organics. It’s part breakfast, part nature activity. Yup, a two in one. We’ll explain…

First, there are three adorable cups of instant, organic cereal that you simply add hot water to. Portable, delicious, and EASY. The cereal cups are a mix of whole oat flakes, super grains like amaranth, quinoa, buckwheat, and more. Plus they’re full of blueberries and cinnamon. Kiddos 4 months and up can enjoy.

Next, the box that contains it all is made of carrot seeds! You soak the box in water for one hour, plant it in your garden, then water it daily to grow your very own carrots. How cool is that? A nutritious breakfast that will keep your tot full (and a gardening activity to keep them busy!) until lunch.

We love teaching kids about nature and nutrition. They’re naturally curious about the world around them and getting them involved in growing their own food will make them healthy eaters for life. …Now if only Little Duck could get them napping as fabulously as they’re snacking.

Spring Cleaning In A Snap!

As an expectant mama-to-be, I’ve been obsessing over getting my house clean for the new babe’s arrival! But add on top of that, a newfound paranoia about the the type of cleaning supplies being used. So I starting asking more experienced Moms what to do to get my Spring cleaning done in a snap, using the best products for me and the baby. One name kept coming up, Homejoy.

Homejoy is a new cleaning service made especially for busy moms. So I decided to give it a whirl. Homejoy’s simple, speedy booking system (I did it on my phone!) instantly matches you with verified, rigorously screened cleaning professionals. I was also happy to find out that I could request non-toxic cleaning supplies or even provide my own.

The cleaning team that came to my place was awesome. They didn’t leave until the house was in perfect condition from top to bottom (I could get used to this!) and they did it all with a smile. They even talked to me about easy ways to keep things tidy between their visits. Plus they shared areas to focus on keeping spick and span for babies and toddlers. (i.e.: Clean floors are a mama must since little explorers will always find something icky to eat off them.)

I started thinking how a session with Homejoy could be the perfect, out of the box baby gift for my equally preggers girlfriend, as well as for my friend who has a newborn AND a toddler to run around after. The only downfall is that it’s certainly addictive. Who knew the grout between my tiles could get so sparkly white? Go to and claim $25 discount on your first appointment (or simply type in “SoCalMoms” at check out). Happy Spring!

Sneak Peek: Mamas & Papas Urbo2 Chestnut Tweed Stroller

Job perk #274: We often get sneak peeks of the latest, hottest baby and toddler gear before it hits the market. This week we got to test run the new 2015 Urbo2 Stroller by Mamas & Papas. We’re fans of this vintage-inspired British line because there isn’t a cheezy primary color or character to be found in any of their collection. It’s chic without being stuffy and they feature all the modern conveniences we need as Moms with a classic throwback look. Our new favorite is the Signature Edition Chestnut Tweed Urbo2. Said with a fabulous faux British accent, naturally!

So first, why we fell in love…. The “tweed” fabric is actually wipeable and accented with a quilted hood and copper accessories. It’s got a fully reversible reclining seat so babe can face you or outward. There is an easily accessible basket beneath to store goodies or go shopping. Plus, as a (slightly paranoid) new mama-to-be, I like the sunshade, insect net, and peek-a-boo window.

Now, why it can be hard to love a Brit… Mainly, the price. This is definitely a high-end stroller with a retail of about $670. So the Urbo2 is not an extra, convenience stroller. Mamas & Papas do offer their new Armadillo XT at a lighter price, but once you’ve gone tweed it’s hard to go back. We have to love our stroller as much as our favorite, go-to purse — Because as a Mom, it’s the accessory we’ll have with us the most, well besides the babe himself.

An Ikea Hack!

After another epic trip to Ikea-land, we came home with one too many cardboard boxes and some new Mala florescent paints. But instead of just taking our paint to plain old paper, we decided to create giant cardboard murals… $10 never went so far!

Toddlers will love it if you shake the cardboard back and forth underneath them as they squirt the paint, modern art style.

For bigger kids, tape a cardboard slat on the bottom of an outdoor table. Then have them lay on their backs to paint, Michelangelo style!
